If you have noticed a leak or burst pipe the first think to do will be to locate you mains stopcock and shut off your water supply. Keep turning the stopcock clockwise until you are unable to so any further. This will stop any further water from getting into your plumbing system, however, water that is already in the system will still leak out. For example, if you notice any leaks from radiators or heating pipes, this water could keep flowing until the whole system is completely empty.

If you smell gas or suspect a gas leak, it's important to shut off your Gas Supply by the emergency control valve at the meter. Make sure all naked flames have been extinguished and do not smoke or light any matches.  Open all doors and window or vacate the property immediately, depending on the severity.

Please do not turn on the gas supply again until a Gas Safe Registered Engineer has given the all clear.

If you have regular checks and services on your property appliances, your carbon monoxide alarm should be functioning and so in an emergency will start beeping. If you hear this it is important to act quickly to minimise the impact of the leak. 

First, check whether any residents are experiencing symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning – confusion, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting. If so, phone the emergency services and notify them that someone has symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning.

After this, it's important that you and all other residents vacate the premises and do not re-enter until your property has been given the all clear.
